Warblers, Kinglets still hanging around Holyoke

On a short walk through Pulaski Park this morning I found this Golden-crowned Kinglet hanging around in the trees and shrubs near the river, calling frequently. If there were others around, I didn’t see or hear them.

I spotted my first Ruby-crowned Kinglet in the city last November, and my first Golden last winter. I don’t see them every time I venture out, but I have a hunch that they’re usually just out of sight.

The warbler below was flitting about deep in the brush; I think this is an immature Yellow-rumped Warbler, but I didn’t manage to get either a good, clear look or a good, clear photo.

After last year’s surprise visit from a Black-and-white Warbler in January, I’m curious to see what interesting visitors pop up in the city this year.

For now, though, I’m welcoming the return of the juncos, and planning to keep a sharper eye out for waterfowl along the river and owls in Pulaski and Veterans parks.
